“People need people - for initial and continued survival, for socialization, for the pursuit of satisfaction. No one - not the dying, not the outcast, not the mighty - transcends the need for human contact.”

— Irvin D. Yalom

What happens after I sign up?

After you submit the form below, Erica will contact you to set up a brief phone call. You will talk with her about specifics of the group and she can answer any questions you have.

Erica will also ask you some questions about yourself to find out if the group is a good fit for you, such as:

  • What you’re hoping the group will help you with?

  • What led you to consider joining this group?

  • What your interpersonal style is like, such as how you share/open up to others and offer/accept feedback.

  • If you anticipate any challenges you might have to being in a group, such as social anxiety, trust issues, big emotions, reactivity/sensitivity, etc - these aren’t necessarily reasons to not join, it’s just helpful to know about them ahead of time!

  • If you’re able to commit to consistent attendance and at least 10 sessions.

 FAQs

  • The “normal” and “socially acceptable” rules that control how we usually interact with others are intentionally set aside in group therapy to allow for a totally different interpersonal experience. Group therapy is more than simply talking with your friends, and dives deeper than a support group typically would.

A therapy group encourages powerful, authentic, and meaningful interactions so that each member can process her experiences as they arise, which allows for a whole new way to understand herself.

The challenges we experience in the world often show up in the group experience. Group therapy gives members the opportunity to slow down and examine the way they relate to others.

Members are helped by receiving perspectives, support, encouragement, and feedback from multiple people in a safe and confidential environment, guided by an experienced therapist.

At the core of the group process is the opportunity for members to talk as openly as they possibly can about their interactions and experiences of each other as well as any aspects of the group experience that may come to mind.

  • Unfortunately, most people have been hurt in their connections in important relationships, which leads them to unconsciously protect themselves - or to develop defenses. The interpersonal feedback available in group therapy is a great way to uncover and work through these defenses and discover a more authentic version of yourself.

Members can also gain valuable insights about how their early experiences have colored or distorted the ways they see themselves and those around them. When members offer one another observations and different perspectives they are giving each other new ways to understand themselves, which in turn can lead to enhanced wellbeing and contentment.

  • If you answer yes to these questions, you’re a great fit!

-Are you willing and able to examine your interpersonal behaviors, to self-disclose, to reflect on yourself and others, and to give and receive feedback?

-Are you open and prepared to engage with the other group members?

-Are you willing to put in the effort needed to make valuable changes in your life?

-Are you willing and able to commit to several months of group meetings, knowing that it can take time to establish trust, safety, and cohesion in a therapy group, all of which are necessary for personal growth?

  • Think about that feeling of acceptance, validation, and solidarity you feel when you’re with a group of close friends. Connecting with others gives us a sense of safety and security, which in turn allows us to feel comfortable enough to explore our feelings and opens potential for personal growth. Feeling the strength and support from a group can be quite a powerful experience, unlike what you’ve felt in individual therapy.

  • Health insurance covers group therapy! I accept Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, and United insurance plans.

If you don’t have one of these insurance plans, you can pay the out of pocket cost of $65 per session.

  • Not only have I facilitated many types of therapy groups, I have also felt first hand the power of being part of a therapy group. Much of my passion for providing therapy comes the connection I develop and feel with my clients, and how that connection can bring a profound sense of acceptance and validation.

My role in group therapy is to help facilitate meaningful and genuine connections between group members, which allows for many healing experiences of validation and acceptance. I also serve as a guide so members can explore themselves and their experiences in deeper ways.
